About

I’m Jess. I write everything here.

Mom of two, wife, and the person on the other end of every article on this site.

I’m not a therapist. I’m not a certified parenting coach. I don’t have letters after my name. What I have is 9 years of doing this in a real house, with real kids who have never once behaved the way the books said they would.

That’s the whole premise of The Family Life Lab.

Why this exists

It started at 10pm, both kids finally asleep, my husband and I on the same sofa scrolling on separate phones. He said “we should do something this weekend” and I said “sure,” and then neither of us brought it up again. That was the whole conversation. We had been running the house perfectly and running past each other for about a year, and that was the night I noticed.

Afterward I went looking for help, and I found two kinds of advice.

The clinical kind, written by people who have never been that tired. And the perfect kind, written by people whose homes apparently never get loud.

Neither one was any use at 9pm on a Tuesday.

So I started writing down what actually worked in my house. Not theories. Things I tried, things that failed, and the handful of things that changed something.

What you’ll find here

Four topics, because these are the four things that break first in a family.

How I write

Every article on this site is written by me. My own kids, my own failures, and my own house are the test case.

I read the research when it matters, and I tell you when the evidence is thin. I don’t pretend one approach fits every family, because yours is not mine.

And I don’t shame parents. Not the ones who yell, not the ones who hand over the iPad, not the ones who are barely holding on. I have been all three.

The books

I wrote three books for the fathers and husbands in my life who needed them. The Better Husband Blueprint, The Father Blueprint, and The Wife Decoder.

They came from watching good men drift in the two relationships they care most about, loving their families the whole time, with no framework for turning that love into what they actually do on a Tuesday morning.

Say hello

I read every email. If something here helped, or if you’re stuck on something I haven’t written about yet, tell me. It’s usually where the next article comes from.
